About Portimao
Portimão is a Portuguese city in Faro District and sub region of Algarve, with about
36 000 residents (numbers of 2001). The city is located about 2 km from the sea and is an important fishing centre and tourism.
Portimao is the centre of the county and covers an area of 182 08 km ² with 49 881 inhabitants (Number's of 2008), is subdivided into 3 parishes. The county is bordered to the north by the county of Monchique East by Silves and Lagoa, West by Lagos and the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

History:
We can find traces of archaeological human presence, in the area, since the Neolithic.
Neolithic
In the Alcalar area there is an important necropolis Neolithic, classified by the \"monument No.7\" consisting of a circular chamber of shale plates This chamber is accessed by a corridor, like similar monuments scattered throughout western Europe, especially the monuments found in Ireland. The floor is slate and earthenware limestone. A vault with two lateral rituals niches topped by two slabs and protected by a mound. Other cemetery can be found in Monte Canelas.
Romanization
The most striking remnants still exists, they are located near the village of Figueira in the area of Abicada at the confluence of two rivers, where you can find a Roman archaeological with several rooms. Also in the \"Coca Maravilhas\" was discovered a tank from this period, which appears very well preserved. In Arade River was found several archaeological objects, including gold coins.
Fifteenth century
Of the time of King Afonso III, there is a charter that talks about the site of Portimão, Under Kingdom of Alfonso V, with the request of 40 residents, born S. Lawrence Barrosa, that resulted later in the Vila Nova de Portimão.
Twentieth Century
Portimão at the beginning of the century due to its industrial development become one of the great bastions of working class struggle, and José Buísel (anarcho-syndicalist) one of its main leaders.
In the year 1924 occur two events of particular importance. December 11 when the town received the title of city by Manuel Teixeira Gomes President of the Portuguese Republic and the founding of the first community Christian of the Assembly of God in Portugal, through the missionary José de Matos, also responsible for the founding of other churches of the same name in Santarem and Alcanhões. After the peak and decline of the canning industry in the 50 to 70, Portimão chose a development model, similar to other places in the Algarve, with an extensive range of hotels, restaurants and shops. Places to see
Bivar Palace - built in the last decade of the eighteenth century. Neoclassical and baroque style, is currently the headquarters of the City Council.

Jesuit College - Imposing building of the seventeenth century, with a facade of high walls with geometric trim at the main doors and pediment of undulating lines.
ISMAT Building (Industrial School) which was placed uncovered a tank, probably from the seventeenth century.
