Faro is a Portuguese city with about 41 000 inhabitants, is the capital of the the region, sub region, and the old province of Algarve, which occupies an area of 4960 km ² and live 426 386 people, number of 2007. It is the seat of a municipality with 201.59 km ² and 58 698 inhabitants in 2008, is divided into 6 parishes. It is bordered to the north and west by the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, east of Olhão, Loulé by west and south by the Formosa Ria and the Atlantic Ocean. History of Faro.
The first date that makes reference to Faro, come from the eighth century BC, during the Phoenician colonization of the Western Mediterranean. The city served as a trading post, making part of an extensive system based on commercial exchange of agricultural products, fish and minerals. Its name at that time was \"Ossónoba\", one of the most important urban centres of southern Portugal. Between the third century and eighth century AD the city was under Roman and Visigoth occupation, been conquered by the Moors in the year 713 AD, erecting a fort there. Following independence from Portugal in 1143, the first king of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques and his successors began to expand the country's south, regaining the territories then occupied by the Moors, which culminated in the conquest of the Algarve and Faro in the year 1249 by the troops of King Afonso III. Faro received the title of city status in 1540 and since 1830, the capital of the Algarve. Faro was partially destroyed during the great earthquake of 1755, and part of its walls, as well as some other buildings collapsed. .

Faro Today.
Faro took its cosmopolitan vocation with the inauguration of its international airport on 11 July 1965, even during the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar.
