Albufeira - Are unknown the origins of Albufeira, but it seems that the region was already inhabited in prehistoric times and the place where now stands the city would have been a few centuries before our era, an important town with its seaport.
The original village was occupied by the Romans who gave the name of Baltum. Introduced a centralized administrative organization and developed an intense farming and trade. They built aqueducts, roads and bridges of which there are still traces.
The name \"Albufeira\" derives from the Arabic word \"Al-buhera\" which means castle of the Sea, which probably comes from its proximity to the ocean or the lake which was formed at the lower zone. The Arabs built strong defensive fortifications, making it almost impregnable, which to some extent was not unfounded, because Albufeira was one of the squares that the Arabs kept longer in his possession. When Afonso III held the throne, as part of the Algarve had fallen into the hands of Christians. Templars and Hospitallers, military orders, which helped with the Reconquista, often skipped the lands that were still under Arab rule, but is always held on the strong walls of Albufeira. Only after the capture of Faro is the situation of Albufeira has become untenable. Surrounded by enemies on all sides, the square fell to Afonso III, who immediately donated it to theOrder of Aviz.
During the reign of Manuel I have the village regained its former importance, as this monarch granted a charter on August 20 de1504. Albufeira Algarve cities was the most hit by natural disasters. But it was the earthquake of 1755 that caused the greatest damage. The sea invaded the town with waves reaching 10 meters in height, destroying almost all buildings.
In 1833, during the civil war between absolutists and liberals, Albufeira was surrounded and attacked by soldiers of the Upside Down: A popular leader absolutist severely damaged the town and executed many of its inhabitants.
From the mid-nineteenth century there was a development of the economy thanks to the fishing. In the first decades of the twentieth century there was a sharp increase in export of fish and nuts. The village then had five factories employing 700 to 800 people, mainly fishermen's wives. From 1930 to 1960 there have been times of decadence, the frames of fishing here ruined, the factories closed, the boats disappeared and many houses were abandoned. The population was reduced to half and fishing became again a subsistence activity.
In the early 60's the place saw the birth of the tourist phenomenon, Albufeira was sought by national tourists, but it was mainly with the British that prospered.
