Lagos - Algarve - Portugal

Lagos - Set on one of the largest bays in the Algarve, Lagos is an attractive, busting town. In the 8^Th Century it was conquered by the Arabs, who left behind fortifications thet were extended in the 16^th century. The discoveries of the 15^th century, pioneered by Henry the Navigator, whose statue gazes scowlingly out to sea, turned Lagos into an important naval center. The site of the first slave market in Europe is marked by a plaque under the arcades on Rua da Senhora da Graca. The city was was the capital of the Algarve from 1576-1756. Extensive damage was caused by the earthquake of 1755, so that today the center consists primarily of pretty 18th and 19th century buildings. The citizens of Lagos continue to make their living from fishing, wich helps the town to retain a character independent of the tourist trade. The smart, Lagos new marina on the east side ot town provides the first safe anchorage on the south coast for boats coming in from the Atlantic.

Praia da Luz - Algarve - Portugal

Praia da Luz "Beach of Light" is a resort located about 6km from Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal. It is a holiday destination drawing visitors mainly from Portugal, Britain, France and Germany. Praia da Luz also known as "Luz de Lagos" or "Luz" is the name of the tourist village and also of the beach. Residual activities from its origins as a fishing village are now only found in isolated pockets to the west, and it is now dominated by several holiday-villa complexes. Praia da Luz beach is an intermediate size Blue Flag beach with two distinct zones: the white sand characteristic of Algarve beaches and the 'rock zone'. The water is clean and transparent but the temperature is somewhat variable. A Meteorite struck the sea near Praia da Luz and forms part of the cliff next to the beach. It can be seen from the photograph that the rock is of a different type.
